The trap Anthropic built for itself
What Happened
Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and others have long promised to govern themselves responsibly. Now, in the absence of rules, there's not a lot to protect them.
Our Take
Anthropic promised responsible self-governance. Now there's no actual governance, so they're trapped between doing what's profitable and staying true to their marketing. That's not a trap—that's operating without regulation and hoping your brand holds.
Won't work forever. Either they get actual constraints (regulation), or they eventually make a move that tanks their credibility. There's no third path.
What To Do
Track when Anthropic's first big governance failure happens—it's coming.

What Skeptics Say
Self-governance pledges by AI labs are structurally worthless without external enforcement — Anthropic's responsible scaling framing actively reduces pressure for real regulation by giving policymakers cover to defer indefinitely.
