What Happened

An internal OpenAI memo lays out five strategic priorities for the enterprise business - including a new model codenamed "Spud," a platform play for AI agents, and the blunt accusation that Anthropic is overstating its revenue by 8 billion dollars. Our Take

OpenAI's internal memo names a new model codenamed "Spud" as the anchor of five enterprise priorities, alongside a platform push for AI agents. The memo accuses Anthropic of overstating revenue by $8 billion.

If Spud ships, every team's current model-selection rationale gets invalidated overnight. Agent workflows running on GPT-4o will hit a new cost/capability tradeoff. Treating your current model selection as settled infrastructure is exactly wrong — capability resets happen every quarter.

Agent builders should decouple from hardcoded model IDs now. LiteLLM routing means Spud swaps in without a rewrite. Teams not in active agentic development can ignore this until it ships.

What To Do

Use LiteLLM routing instead of hardcoding model IDs because Spud will invalidate your current GPT-4o selection as soon as it ships.

What Skeptics Say

Internal memos declaring a new model will make everything 'significantly better' are written for morale and investor optics, not technical accountability—OpenAI has a consistent pattern of internal hype that doesn't always survive contact with release-day benchmarks.
