What Happened

Google is adding a way to customize and instruct avatars for video creation in the Vids app.

Our Take

Actually useful. Avatar video generation's becoming table stakes for sales training, internal comms, that kind of thing. Google Vids gets it.

Real problem: how many people actually use Vids? It's been out a year and remains niche. Feature quality's irrelevant if your audience doesn't exist. This is solid for the small group using the product.

What To Do

Track Vids' DAU; that's what matters, not feature announcements.

Builder's Brief

Who

teams building internal video content or training materials in Google Workspace

What changes

avatar-based video creation moves from external tools into the existing Workspace workflow, reducing tool-switching friction

When

months

Watch for

enterprise Workspace renewal rates and whether IT admins enable Vids by default in new rollouts

What Skeptics Say

Prompt-directed avatars in a productivity suite is a feature, not a platform shift — Google Vids has not demonstrated meaningful enterprise adoption and this update does nothing to close the gap with HeyGen or Synthesia in the prosumer video market.
