Google launches Nano Banana 2 model with faster image generation

What Happened

Google is making Nano Banana 2 a default model in Gemini app and in AI mode.

Our Take

Honestly? 'Nano Banana 2' is the worst model name I've ever heard. But that's the only interesting thing here. Faster image gen is cool, but Google's been chasing Midjourney and DALL-E for two years and they're still not there. Default in Gemini app means nothing if people aren't using Gemini.

The real question: can they compete on quality while staying fast and cheap? The market's moving toward specialized models (Grok for tweets, Claude for code), not all-purpose ones. Google's betting scale and speed fix everything—spoiler, they don't.

What To Do

Wait for actual quality benchmarks against Midjourney v7 before claiming this changes anything.

What Skeptics Say

Making Nano Banana 2 the default rather than opt-in suggests Google is inflating engagement metrics rather than earning adoption. Faster image generation is table stakes in a commoditized multimodal market.
